Welcome to Term 2
Now members of the ‘Senior School’, our Year 5 students are focused and determined to reach great heights. They are excited to take on greater responsibility and leadership roles as they prepare for Year 6. The four teachers there to inspire them throughout the year are Mrs Nikki Heffernan, Ms Kelly Morton, Miss Molly Clark and Miss Pru Freeth.
The start of Term Three has been an exciting one for Year 5 as we had a visit from the Robogals, an organisation with the aim to promote engineering and to see more women in STEM careers across Australia. We all had a turn at programming a robot and moving it around the room with our commands. We have jumped right into our Learning Exploration topic, ‘A global community requires peace building and conflict resolution’ in which we have created our own collaborative countries and share resources to run our countries. Together we continue our love for literature as we have started our class Novel ‘Once’ and explore WWII with our characters.
We have continued with our fantastic start to year 5 and have settled into our classrooms and routines. We showed our exceptional swimming skills at our house swimming day, excelled at teamwork in year 5 sport and have persuaded our peers and teachers with our persuasive writing in class. We had the great privilege to talk and complete drills with two fantastic Western Bulldog players Lin Jong and Fergus Greene who came to R.H.C.S to talk to us about setting goals and leadership. If we keep our positive mindsets and excitement for learning, we know grade 5 is going to be the best year ever!
Effective Resource Mangement
Throughout our Learning Exploration topic ‘Effective Resource Management is Vital to Sustainability’ we have worked hard to explore and question what are resources, where do they come from and what the environmental impacts of excessive resource use are. This took us to Moonlit Sanctuary where we learnt about the work being done to help endangered species and native Australian animals. We walked along side the kangaroos, felt the cold scales of reptiles and learnt about the different habitats and dangers each animal faced. We became keepers, as we discussed food sources, natural and man made dangers and what we can do to help keep the animals protected.
Using this formation we created our own factual narrative and followed our writing process to produce a story book with an environmental message.
