Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships

Respectful Relationships Education has been a core part of the Victorian Curriculum since 2016, taught in government, Catholic, and many independent schools from Foundation to Year 12. This program complements our wellbeing approach, fostering a culture of respect, equality, and inclusion across all areas of school life—including classrooms, staff rooms, sports, events, and social interactions.

By embedding respect and positive relationships into education, we support students' academic success, mental health, classroom behavior, and connections with teachers and peers. The Royal Commission into Family Violence highlighted the crucial role of schools in shaping attitudes and creating a future free from violence and discrimination.

At RHCS, students develop personal, social, and emotional skills through engaging learning experiences, covering:

  1. Emotional Literacy

  2. Personal Strengths

  3. Positive Coping

  4. Problem-Solving

  5. Stress Management

  6. Help-Seeking

  7. Gender and Identity

  8. Positive Gender Relations

The Resilience and Rights components (Topics 1-6) build a strong foundation in emotional and social skills, equipping students to engage meaningfully with Respectful Relationships concepts (Topics 7 & 8). Through this program, we empower students to embrace respect, build resilience, and contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate community.

The Resilience Project

In 2023, we have partnered with The Resilience Project to assist us in teaching students about Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness. The research is clear; the more positive emotion you experience, the more resilient you will be. For that reason we focus on three key pillars proven to cultivate positive emotion; Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM).

Gratitude

Paying Attention to What I Have

What is Gratitude? It’s about paying attention to the things and moments we have right now, and not worrying about what we don’t have. We practise gratitude by noticing the positives that exist around us, and by being thankful for things, places and people in our lives.

Empathy

Understanding How Other People Feel

What does empathy mean? Empathy and kindness are closely linked. So are empathy and Compassion. To be empathetic is to put ourselves in the shoes of others to feel and see what they are. We practice this by being kind towards other people.

Mindfulness

Being Calm & Present in Any Given Moment

How to practice mindfulness? Mindfulness activities help us to be present in the moment and can often create a feeling of calm. We practice this through slowing down and concentrating on one thing at a time. This includes meditation, colouring in and flow states.
